What we do
Idyllica turns degraded land into productive forests, and protects virgin forests from the imminent threat of deforestation.
Deforestation
in Paraguay
THE MOTIVATION BEHIND OUR WORK
In Paraguay, the Gran Chaco, second-largest forest in South America, is under a raging threat of deforestation.
1. The Gran Chaco has lost 25% -or 3 million hectares- of its native forest in the last 20 years.
2. Every hour, the Chaco loses forest cover equivalent to 32 football fields.
3. Due to unsustainably managed cattle farms and high-chemical monoculture farming, a vicious cycle of land degradation and deforestation is playing out throughout the region
4. This leads to detrimental loss of biodiversity, putting many species At Risk and Endangered
5. ... and destroys habitat for even more species that are so rare, that there is not even enough data to classify their status...
WHAT WE DO
Protect what we still can
We find large plots of legally owned virgin forestland. Instead of clearing it for agricultural development, we partner with the landowners in order to:
Preserve Ecosystems
Protect the land and its valuable biodiversity from being clear cut.
Empower Communities
Create novel and enriching career opportunities, combating rural exodus and enabling communities to remain connected with their land and culture.
Land
Monitoring
Monitor changes and implement early detection systems for wildlife, wildfire, and intrusion using technology such as satellite imagery, drone overflights, camera traps, remote sensing, and regular on-site patrols.
We reforest their land with tree species that provide nutrients to the degraded soil, create shade, and have harvestable value beyond their timber, ensuring they will not be cut down for fuel or sale.
This eventually increases cattle stocking rates and minimises input costs such as chemical fertilisers and machine intervention.
PRODUCTIVITY
This diversifies the professional growth opportunities for local populations.
Social
Finally, this creates sustainable, permanent forests by bringing together cattle farms and productive forests, and avoids displacement of degenerative agricultural practices.
Holistically managed
What we do
Replant permanent productive forests
When we are too late to protect untouched forests, we partner with struggling cattle farms to implement a silvopastoral grazing system.
